Tribes: Ascend - Free to Play PC FPS

(Disclaimer: I want to apologize in advance--I am about to sound like a Hi-Rez employee. Unfortunately, I just can't tone down my enthusiasm for this because I've been waiting for Tribes to make a comeback for at least 10 years!!11)

I'm hoping at least some of you know about Tribes, but even if you don't you should really give it a shot assuming you're looking for a good FPS to play.

If you do know anything about Tribes, you know that it's been more or less dead for close to or maybe over a decade. Hi-Rez Studios has actually done an amazing job with bringing classic Tribes gameplay back with a few nice changes. If you don't know anything about Tribes, it's a very unique FPS. It's a combination of fast movement and combat, heavy focus on teamwork, and a fairly high skill cap. It really is an interesting game and since it's F2P I again really suggest giving it a try if you're in the mood for a Sci-Fi FPS.

Another thing that I've really enjoyed about Tribes: Ascend is the community. I usually never really get involved in game communities for one reason or another, but the community in this game is surprisingly awesome. Not only are the players generally great, but Hi-Rez is actually very receptive to the competitive community and recently put in the money for a $2500 tournament (which is actually still going on--will be continued next weekend).

Lastly, if you've ever played any F2P games you may be worried about the structure and whether or not it's pay to win. Personally, I think they did a pretty solid job. The majority of unlocks are more or less side-grades, and most things are pretty reasonably priced (especially after the latest patch which added a 'deal of the day'). Unlocking some weapons can be a bit grindy, but the upgrade costs are very comfortable and honestly unless you're like me (I like to play every class rather than focusing on one or two) you'll probably be able to get everything you want at a pretty reasonable pace while still having tons of fun.

I figured this would be a good place and a good community to tell about a solid F2P game, and I hope someone can get some enjoyment out of it.

My personal favorite Tribes video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjyUy5f3VIw

Explanation: Tribes is all about speed, and CTF is the big game mode. Cappers generally run practiced routes around a map in order to build up as much speed as possible so they can grab the flag and get home without dying. When someone grabs the flag at a low speed, they're called a llama. The video does a great job of summing up how a capper feels when someone llamas the flag. There are a ton of other very well done Tribes videos if you're interested!

I BELIEVE we both get 5000 XP (used for upgrades and unlocks) once you reach rank 6. Completely up to you if you want to use it. If you hate referrals for some reason or don't want to encourage me using my referral link, I'll be including a direct link below this!

    Tribes Ascend sans referral: https://www.tribesascend.com

Just in case you hate the idea of referrals.

Since I really want to stress how great the community is, I'd also encourage you to check out the Tribes: Ascend streamers over at twitch.tv if you're into streaming and the subreddit for tribes which is /r/tribes. Additionally, if you're interested in learning more about competitive play or just having an organized community to play with in general, I believe sandboxclan.net is going to be doing a lot of free mentoring and looks like it'll be a really nice community in general. It might not be up and running just yet, but it's something to keep an eye on if you're interested.

I know this is a bit over the top salesman and I do apologize, but it really is a fun game and it's nice having a solid free game to play if that's your thing. I know I'm always looking for them, and hopefully I can help spread the Tribes love!
