Why not? I've done several of these and been paid with no problem. I used an email address that I only use for hits, and of course I wouldn't do them if I had to pay for the site or anything, but what's the problem with signing up for a free site and getting paid a $1 for it?

Because they violate the TOS. See here: https://www.mturk.com/mturk/help?helpPage=policies. Requesters are prohibited from: collecting personal identifiable information, posting HITs requiring registration at another website or group, posting HITs that generate "referred" site visits or click-through traffic, posting HITs that directly or indirectly promote a site, service, or opinion... among others. Because of that, these hits can get taken down/the requester can be shut down at any time. If this happens, you don't get paid.

Tons of great info here. Thank you for posting this!

Also, wanted to ad been seeing "Sign up for this game on the Game Show Network". I figured it was someone who gets paid by how many people sign up, and steered clear.

What about usability testing? Does that violate TOS? I see those all the time.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

I'm still fairly new here and have been trying to work my way through the forum. Finally had a chance to read this thread all the way through.

I've been good about not doing HITs that ask for very specific information. And I have steered clear of the dating site and usability testing HITs. Glad to know that I've done that for good reason.

There is so much information here and so much to remember. I hope I can soak it all in without too much trouble.

Not only is it against TOS, but you've been very lucky to get paid for those. My first week of turking, I signed up for another site with the promise of being paid (they even had me complete a task on the site to increase their revenue), and then I was promptly rejected, because the HIT was a scam. You are taking a risk if you accept a HIT like that. A rejection has a huge effect on your approval rating when you are just starting out.

I also made the mistake that first week of entering my phone number into a HIT, and was charged 9.99 for some app I didn't order. That was a monthly charge. Luckily, I caught it right away, and my carrier reversed the charge.

I hadn't yet found Turker Nation when I did those things or I would have known better!

Before I start any HITs I look to see what the requester is looking for and compare that to the amount they're paying and the length of time they give you to perform the task. In general I have found that if the time is really short they're not worth it and probably a scam.

I will say that I've been lucky, but had a couple really good paying HITs that technically violate Amazon TOS. I did an hour long survey over text message one time for a $20 iTunes Gift Card + whatever the payment on the HIT was originally.

I did a survey last week for a University (Wake Forest) that ended with an offer to take a non-mTurk survery. I did it and made $61.00 in Amazon gift card so I tend to trust the academics but I am not sure I would have done that if it had been a company.
