What is this self-employment taxyou speak of? I'm new to all of this. I knew I had to claim what I make, but I didn't know I would have to pay a tax on top of the Fed and State tax. Hopefully it's not much, otherwise I might be working for free!

When you work a normal job you pay a little over 7% for social security and medicare. What your employer may or may not tell you is that they also have to match that money for social security and medicare. When you Turk, or do any other type of self employment, you have to pay the 7% on the employee side and the employer side for a total of about 15%.

@carolyn We did our taxes a couple weeks ago, and got a small refund. Last year we had to pay, so at least there's that. I'm always worried about getting audited also with no W2 from here, but my income is not that much.

Crap! Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to have my taxes done by a professional next year so he/she will know that.

    Good morning everyone!

I already filed my taxes with Turbotax, probably not the cheapest option, but its what I'm used to.

Got my federal return forever ago, however it looks like I'll have to call the state to see what's going on with that :/

Since I'll be spending a lot more time doing self employment stuff this year, I'm not looking forward to my taxes next year.

    Good morning Turkonauts!

Tornado came through about 5pm yesterday. Power went out until 10pm. It wasn't that close to me so I don't think I was in danger. One person a few miles away was killed though.
