    U.S. Patent & Trademark Office records show that Amazon today received a patent on something called “customizing gift instrument experiences for recipients.” Yeah, it sounds OK from the title. But digging into the text, the approach includes the option for the giver to not only recommend items via the gift card but also to restrict the types of things the card can be used to buy — and to get a report back on what the recipient purchases.
    OK, in all seriousness, these are basically parental controls for gift cards — probably not the type of thing you would give to a friend or adult family member. And in that context it’s actually pretty interesting.

    Amazon sells EVERYTHING.

    The very idea of these gift cards disturbs me, it's such a loaded gift. Hey, here's an idea- I have a $50 gift card from Amazon with these controls. I buy a couple educational books with it, and then send them BACK and buy a couple dildos and a dvd of gay pornography with the credit. Hmm... I wonder.

    As it related to parental controls, I think this is a marvelous idea. I'm almost certain that there will be an option to buy this type of gift card compared to the standard gift cards. I don't have a problem with parents monitoring their children's purchases, especially if the child is younger than 17 years old. I find that people typically don't buy "personal" items with gift cards that other people have given them... not saying that it doesn't happen, because I know some people will buy whatever, but some, yes some just buy typical things.

    Anything that is purchased online, with a credit card or a gift card is traceable...so someone knows what "naughty" items are purchased in one form or another. Private really isn't so private when it pertains to the internet!
