Guide for new members of Turker Nation and those thinking of signing up

Guide to new members of Turker Nation

Welcome to Turker Nation! This is a forum for people that perform the tasks at mTurk, known as Turkers. If you are a requester on mTurk this guide isn’t for you - PM Spamgirl with your mTurk Requester Name and she will update your account to give you full access.

Now, where is the good stuff on the forum? The truth is that we limit new members to only a few sections of the board until we get to know you better - this protects us from spammers and scammers who would love to infiltrate the forum. The best way for us to get to know you is by for you to post in the areas you DO have access to. When you've fulfilled the requirements, you should soon find yourself able to access to the other parts of the forum.

We recommend you drop by the Turker Introductions area and start a thread introducing yourself. You can start off by telling us what HITs you like to do and any details about yourself that you feel comfortable in sharing. You will find many helpful people on the board that will talk to you there. Next, feel free to drop by mTurk General where we talk all about mTurk. If you have any questions about mTurk feel free to ask in the mTurk Questions area.

Being thoughtful and respectful towards others on the board will get you far. Our purpose is to share what we know about mTurk and asking nicely will get many to help. Do the opposite and many of us will not reply and you may get an earful from those who do!

To avoid getting into trouble with the moderators, please take the time to read the rules - they are a guide to how to behave here in a manner that is respectful to all. Breaking our rules repeatedly, or just one of our major rules, will lead to you being banned from the board. That's no way to be!

So welcome to the forum and we hope you enjoy your stay!

Edited to add: If you want to post but don't see the correct forum where your post should go, please read this before posting.

A quick way to gain full access is by participating in the Daily HIT Threads!

Note: please do not feel pressured to post! You are welcome here even if you don't post, and there is no rush to get full access. Most of the forum is freely available, so enjoy your time here and if you do get full access, enjoy that too.

    - If you click on Settings you have a ton of options. In General Settings you can "Receive Email Notification of new Private Messages" or, if you don't want it by email, have a pop-up window when you go on the board.

    - You can now subscribe to entire forums! This is great if you want to know when someone posts about your fav requester, or maybe you want to know when a cool survey is posted. Just visit the forum and open the Forum Tools menu and choose Subscribe to This Forum....

    - To report a post, click the button at the bottom left of the post. You can do the same thing on a private message.

    - at the bottom right of a post is multiquote - you can use this to quote multiple posts in your reply, just press it on each post you wish to quote.

If you're looking for the old Forum Jump menu, we have the Quick Navigation menu instead:

It is found at the bottom right of all threads above the quick reply box.

Want to read the latest posts? Click on Latest Posts at the top left of the page.

Want to see what's been posted all day? Click on the Forum Actions menu at the top of the page and choose All of Today's Posts.

    Quick shortcuts when posting:

Want to bold your text? Highlight it and ctrl-b.
    Want to italicize? ctrl-i
    Underline? ctrl-u

Have friends? Want to contact them faster? Use your Friends List! It makes it easy to shoot them a PM or check out their profile.

Want to search by post instead of by thread? Use the Advanced Search in the Search Single Content Type tab. Check Posts next to Show Results As:.
    It's all good.

Guide to new members of Turker Nation: additions

Turker Nation is a community of Turkers. We not only come from many different countries, but we also have many different backgrounds. When you make your first few posts please keep that in mind. You are making a first impression on many people and you need to respect the many different values that are held by the members here. Be careful not to offend others and always be respectful to the other board members.

Please think carefully about where you are placing your posts. Posting qualification questions should never be made in Forum Discussion, but in the qualification section under mTurk Questions instead. Those that put the posts in the wrong places on purpose will find them removed, and may receive an infraction. If you make a post that belongs to a section that you can’t access, it will still be moved to its proper place.

To get full access to all of Turker Nation you will need to post. Do not attempt to spam Turker Nation! Those caught spamming (posting garbage repeatedly just to gain more access) will be banned. We do know many rather lurk than post, but Turker Nation is a community of people that share tips and experiences on Turking. To reach full access you will need to post and share things with us. It is not hard to do and many have learned it has made them new friends. Posts complaining about how hard it is to post will not earn you many friends on Turker Nation (and might even get you an infraction.)

If you want to make a post but do not see a section for it, you likely do not have access to that forum. For example, forums about specific requesters, scripts and tools, and which requesters are the "best" are all inaccessible until you reach the post and length of membership minimums. If you want to ask a question that falls into one of these categories you will just have to wait.

The Hall of Fame/Shame is ONLY for posting your opinions/experiences with requesters. Do not ask questions about when they post HITs, how to complete their work, or other non-review content or your posts will be deleted and you may receive an infraction. DO feel free to share your experiences with requesters, whether good or bad.

If you see a post on the board that you like, click the thanks button at the left bottom of the post. It adds to the poster’s reputation and saves space in the latest posts list. Excessive posting thanking somebody for their posts will be treated as spamming and you will receive an infraction or worst.

Understand that Turker Nation is full of people that are willing to share their Turking experiences, but in return they want to hear about yours.

For any newbs, I wanted to add - it may take a short while after your account is created before you will be able to do anything on the site. You'll create a login, and be able to login to the site and view limited threads, but your posting permissions will prohibit you from doing anything (including posting any replies or new threads). Just be patient and wait for the mods to approve your account. You'll get an email stating that your account has been validated, and then you'll gain basic permissions on the site.

Thank you for the helpful information in this thread. I just received my acceptance notice for mTurk this morning, and don't want to dive right into working without knowing some of the pitfalls.
