I have a Hamilton Beach Stay or Go slow cooker. It has a timer, so you can set how long you want it to cook and then it automatically switches over to warm until you shut it off. I love that feature... it lets me put stuff on in the morning before work and then keep it warm, but not cooking, until I get home. The only drawback is that it makes this horrible beeping noise when you turn it on. But everything else about it is the bee's knees.

I've gotten a lot of recipe ideas from this blog: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/

I've thought about getting a programmable one, maybe when they go on sale during the holidays. I just wasn't sure I'd be smart enough to program it! Glad to hear it doesn't sound like too much work. And yes, that crockpot365 blog is amazing. I love that you can search by the type of food you want to cook, like chicken, beef, pork.

"Programmable" is really a bit of a stretch on their part. It's really just set a timer, press the temperature you want, press start.

Alton Brown recommends geting a manual slow cooker and then using a lamp timer if you want the timed control thing. Here, watch the video (the timer tip is near the end):
