I'm saving for a Kindle Fire, but I'm always afraid of refurbished, even though I understand that sometimes they are actually just returns of unused products that have to be called that. (sorry for the run-on sentence!)

I almost always buy refurbished. It was returned, sold, etc. and sent back to the factory. ANY part showing wear or parts meant to wear out (screen, battery, etc.) are generally replaced. It significantly cuts down on cost to you and has always been a positive experience in my eyes.

I've had my refurbished Kindle for a month or so now and there's absolutely no sign that it wasn't completely brand new. Definitely worth it for this amount of savings!

Same here, got it on the deal last month and it works perfectly and looks brand new.

Hmm. I'm seriously considering this. I gotta blow this gift card balance somehow.
I don't mind refurbished products at all, but I'm a bit unaware of how the market for this kind of stuff is. Are there any decent alternatives to the Kindle Fire, or is it up there in terms of top quality?

No idea. It gets wireless, and is harder to read on than the kindle in bright sunlight. Reflective surface.
I don't have an ipad or anything like that so I have nothing to compare it to.

Lucky you! I got mine just a couple days before joining here and seeing that deal. I was so dad.

It really depends on your needs. It is currently an industry leader for it's hardware and software quality in relation to its low price point. However, it's certainly not top of the line with respect to hardware capabilities if money isn't an issue. If you're looking for a well priced, well rounded media device, I'd suggest the Fire. If you're thinking of using it as more of a laptop replacement, I'd suggest holding out for something higher end.

I'd second this. I like my Fire, but I'm not using it for anything heavy duty. I read, watch a little netflix or youtube, and run a few apps on it. I've really enjoyed it for that, but I wouldn't consider it to be anything like what I'd use my laptop for.

That is an excellent price. I've been debating whether to upgrade my Kindle the Fire, but just don't know if there is that much difference, besides color
and the ability to run apps. At $139.00 though, it's worth a little more thought. Thanks for the info.
